Michigan Mom With 2 Wombs Welcomes Twins!

A Michigan woman with two wombs has given birth to twin daughters — one from each uterus.

Sarah Reinfelder’s two healthy babies were delivered seven weeks premature Thursday by cesarean section at Marquette General Hospital in the Upper Peninsula.

The 21-year-old woman has a condition known as uterus didelphys, and doctors say such twin births are rare. The uteri are different sizes, with the larger twin born from the larger uterus.

Dr. Connie Hedmark and Dr. Breanna Pond first delivered Kaylin Joy, then Valerie Marie, the larger twin by one pound. Kaylin Joy weighed 3 pounds, 15 ounces.

The twins, who don’t have fully developed lung function, are expected to be hospitalized for three or four weeks.

Nadya Suleman Turns Down Offer For Free Home and Nursing Care

While it is being widely reported that Nadya Suleman, the California mother of octuplets born last month is not receiving offers for free products and care, it may seem that this isn’t true. She is just being picky as to which ones she accepts…

The founder of a nonprofit nurses’ group says that the busy mom allowed an offer of free, 24-hour care for the infants and six older children to lapse.

Linda Conforti-West, founder of Angels in Waiting, said today that Nadya Suleman appeared to lose interest in the group’s proposal when she was told last week that a reality show and a biweekly press conference on the babies’ condition was out of the question due to their fragile immune systems.

Angels in Waiting’s offer, which included a new home, expired Thursday at midnight.

Suleman’s publicist could not be immediately reached for comment.

Angels in Waiting specializes in care of premature babies.

Group To Develop National Guidelines On How Much Alcohol — if any — Is Safe During Pregnancy

The group representing obstetricians and gynaecologists said Thursday it will develop national guidelines on how much alcohol — if any — is safe for women to consume leading up to and during pregnancy.

“The advice is extremely inconsistent, the advice is sometimes downright wrong and the perception on the part of the public is extremely wide and varied,” said Dr. Vyta Senikas, a spokeswoman for the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Because there are currently no guidelines in Canada, advice varies from province to province and from physician to physician.

“I have patients who think a couple of beers a day is not an issue. And the question is, is it an issue? That’s what we’re going to look at,” Senikas said. “And it has to do with the equivalents of what a couple of beers are and what a martini is. And there’s the whole issue of binge drinking and patterns of alcohol drinking. It’s a review of the literature on that.”

She said one doctor may tell a pregnant woman, or a woman trying to get pregnant, “don’t drink at all,” while another may say “moderate drinking” is OK.

“Are we talking about a beer? So what’s the percentage of alcohol? Are we talking about a Canadian beer or imported beer? Light beer, wine, cocktails. What are we talking about there? A lot of people, when they think of alcohol, they think of liquor like gin, whiskey. But they may not think of beer,” she said. “We’ve been made aware the message is inconsistent and may in fact be wrong.”

The goal is to put together the best national and international information available to develop guidelines and recommendations for physicians to give to patients.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists estimates between one and six out of every 1,000 children are born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, a term that refers to disabilities that can result from alcohol use during pregnancy.

It is about time that everyone is on the same page.

Team of 70 Successfully Separates Conjoined Egyptian Twins

A team of 70 medical personnel led by Saudi Arabia’s minister of health successfully separated conjoined Egyptian twins on Saturday at a Riyadh hospital, doctors said.

Nine-month-old Hassan and Mahmoud, who were born joined at the abdomen, were separated after nine hours of surgery, Saud al-Jadaan, one of the team’s doctors at King Abdulaziz Medical City, told AFP.

The boys were in separate rooms in the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit as doctors worked to reconstruct the body parts the twins had shared, including bowel, urinary tract and sexual organs.

This was being done to give the boys as much natural organ function as possible.

The operation, which could be seen live on the hospital’s website, was originally expected to take 15 hours but went more quickly than planned, hospital spokesman Sami al-Shalan said.

“We are three hours ahead of time,” he said, attributing that to the operating team’s experience. It was the 21st successful operation to separate conjoined twins at the facility.

The boys should be able to go home to Egypt in two months if there are no complications.

It is amazing to me that there were 70 people assisting with this operation because only 46 people participated in the recent octuplet delivery.

Can Your Diet Increase Your Fertility?

Harvard Researchers studying 18,000 women found those on a fertility diet were six times more likely to conceive.

Their research found that the fat in whole dairy products like milk and ice cream improve fertility.

Experts also advise would-be moms to stay away from trans fats, or at least limit consumption to no more than four grams a day.

Foods that increase fertility are:

  • good proteins
  • slow carbs, like vegetables, fruits and brown rice

Foods that decrease your chances of getting pregnant are:

  • Fast carbs, which are found in white rice, white bread and white sugar
  • red meat

Dr. Koren Barrett of the University of California says this is because

“higher insulin levels and higher glucose levels or sugar levels in our blood disrupt our hormones.”

Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center Welcomes 4 Sets Of Quads In 6 weeks

This has definitely been the year of the multiple birth.

Legendary multiple birth hospital, Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center delivered four sets of quads in a six week period.

The hospital became a household name after it’s staff delivered and grew the Masche Sextuplets and the Wilkinson Quintuplets.

Three of those couples introduced their quads to Today’s Meredith Vieira on Wednesday and talked about the challenges and joys of multiple births.

“It’s amazing and it’s exciting and it’s very tiring and better than anything we expected,” Dafna Noury told Vieira from Las Vegas, where she and her husband Eli Zohar have been dealing with the joys of sleep deprivation for the nearly two weeks since they brought their four infants home from Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, which has delivered more sets of quadruplets than any hospital in the country.

Staten Island Couple Introduces Quints And Takes Two Home

The first two of the quintuplets born to Staten Island couple Jamie and Kevin Ferrante spent their first night at home last night.

The pair became the proud parents of four girls and one boy on December 27, but only Alessia and Emily came home Wednesday night.

“It’s amazing; it’s real and it’s here,” said dad, Kevin, who caught a little sleep in between feeding Alessia — who now weighs 4 pounds, 1 1/2 ounces — and Emily — who is 4 pounds, 3 and 1/2 ounces — every three hours or so.

“They’re a little smaller, they’re basically doing everything a regular baby does,” he said about his girls. “It’s a lot of sleeping for them.”

The first-ever experience yesterday of holding all five of the pint-sized newbies at the same time, came as a sweet shock.

“It was like ‘wow’ you really feel it,” he said. “I didn’t know what that would be like. It really hit home.”

Matthew Ferrante is expected to come home by the end of the week following hernia surgery. The littlest quintuplets, Amanda and Ella, still need to remain in the hospital to gain weight.

“They just have to gain a little weight; they’re all off the oxygen,” said proud but exhausted dad, before heading out for the hospital for feeding, a routine he and his wife have been keeping for weeks.

Tuesday night the neonatalogist told them to get lots of sleep because it will be the last time for a very very long time.
