Laila Ali Reveals She’s Expecting Baby #2!

Exciting news for the Conway family! Laila Ali and her husband Curtis Conway are expecting baby #2!

“I am pregnant again! I’m three months, and I’m so excited, my family is excited,” said a beaming Ali via a video on People.com. “I’m hoping it’s a girl this time!”

Laila tells the magazine that her father, boxing legend Muhammad Ali, is excited about becoming a grandfather again.

“My dad is an excellent grandfather,” she says. “He loves kids. He loves to kiss them to death.”

A former world-class boxer herself, Ali admits it’s a challenge to maintain an exercise regime during pregnancy.

“I’ve noticed I’m putting on weight faster this time, I started showing sooner,” she says. “Staying fit is a challenge, even if you are a former world-class athlete such as myself, because you just don’t have the energy that you used to have. Also, I have to hold myself back because I want to work harder than I’m able to.”

When it comes to nutrition,

“Pregnancy isn’t ‘I can eat whatever I want,’ because you have to remember you’re going to be stuck with a lot of that weight afterwards that you need to try to get off. So I don’t recommend ‘grubbing,'” she says, admitting she succumbs to the occasional pregnancy craving.

“I have cravings all the time, even when I’m not pregnant,” Ali says. “I made a strawberry shortcake last night.” And? “It was great.”

Due in early April 2011, the new baby will join the couple’s son Curtis Jr., who is 2.

LeapFrog To Offer Rebates To Parents Who ‘E-Cycle’ Their Older Systems

Today, LeapFrog Enterprises announced its “Trade Up to Leapster Explorer” program, offering discounts on the Leapster Explorer system. To participate, families simply turn in eligible older LeapFrog platforms through RecycleBank’s online service or in person at Best Buy stores, then receive $10 off a new Leapster Explorer system and $10 off two Leapster Explorer games. And by “trading up,” LeapFrog consumers will be happy to know that their device has been “e-cycled” properly, which helps keeps landfills free from electronics.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generated more than two million tons of electronic waste in 2007, but only 18% of this was recycled—the rest wound up in landfills. And while 23 states have passed legislation mandating statewide electronics recycling, many people are still unaware that electronics can be recycled, or do not have access to a program facilitating collection.

LeapFrog will offer two easy ways for consumers to help the environment while enjoying a great deal on a top-notch learning system for their kids: from home, or in store.

Consumers can recycle their older LeapFrog platform by mail, by visiting the RecycleBank LeapFrog partner page (www.recyclebank.com/leapfrog). Consumers who want instant rewards can visit their local Best Buy store’s Customer Service desk and turn in their LeapFrog system to receive savings on the spot.

Systems are eligible for trade-in are:

  • LeapPad™
  • Leapster®
  • Leapster2
  • Didj™
  • Fly™
  • Fly Fusion™
  • Crammer™

Infant Deaths Prompt CPSC, FDA Warning on Infant Sleep Positioners

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today warned consumers to stop using infant sleep positioners. Over the past 13 years, CPSC and the FDA have received 12 reports of infants between the ages of 1 month and 4 months who died when they suffocated in sleep positioners or became trapped and suffocated between a sleep positioner and the side of a crib or bassinet.

Most of the infants suffocated after rolling from a side to stomach position. In addition to the reported deaths, CPSC has received dozens of reports of infants who were placed on their backs or sides in sleep positioners, only to be found later in potentially hazardous positions within or next to the sleep positioners.

“The deaths and dangerous situations resulting from the use of infant sleep positioners are a serious concern to CPSC,” said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. “We urge parents and caregivers to take our warning seriously and stop using these sleep positioners, so that children can have a safer sleep.”

The two main types of infant sleep positioners are flat mats with side bolsters or inclined (wedge) mats with side bolsters.

Both types of sleep positioners typically claim to help keep infants on their backs and reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The FDA has never cleared an infant sleep positioner to prevent or reduce the risk of SIDS. In addition, CPSC and the FDA are unaware of any scientific studies demonstrating that infant positioners prevent SIDS or are proven to prevent suffocation or other life-threatening harm.

“To date, there is no scientifically sound evidence that infant sleep positioners prevent SIDS,” said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner and a pediatrician. “We want to make sure parents, health care professionals, and childcare providers understand the potential risk of suffocation and stop using infant sleep positioners.”

Sleep positioners also typically claim to do one or all of the following: aid in food digestion to ease colic or the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); and prevent flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly). In light of the new safety data, FDA believes any benefit from using these devices to ease GERD or prevent plagiocephaly is outweighed by the risk of suffocation.

CPSC and the FDA are warning parents and child care providers to:

  • STOP using sleep positioners. Using a positioner to hold an infant on his or her back or side for sleep is dangerous and unnecessary.
  • NEVER put pillows, infant sleep positioners, comforters, or quilts under a baby or in a crib.
  • ALWAYS place an infant on his or her back at night and during nap time. To reduce the risk of SIDS, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing infants to sleep on their backs and not their sides.

The American Academy of Pediatrics does not support the use of any sleep positioner to prevent SIDS.

Manufacturers of infant sleep positioners with medical claims that have not been reviewed by the FDA should stop marketing those products until they submit, and the FDA clears, appropriate premarket review submissions, including necessary safety and effectiveness data.

FDA has informed manufacturers of cleared devices of the agency’s serious concern and has requested that they submit clinical data showing the benefits of their products outweigh the risk of suffocation or other serious harm.

Early Riser? 6 Clocks That Help Teach Your Child When To Get Up

For the last few months my son has been getting up earlier and earlier. Like the birds, he believes that he should get up as soon as the sun rises, which makes him tired and grumpy early in the day.

In an attempt to teach him what time he should get up at I’ve found 6 clocks that use different ways to show your child the proper time to wake up.

From changing colors to sleepy animals, each company has their own way of showing what time your little one should get out of bed.

  1. Groclock – The same company that brought us the groegg and growbag has introduced a groclock.  This modern looking clock uses fun images of the stars and sun to communicate when to go back to sleep
and when it’s time to get up. Due to popular request, this 2010 version
of the Gro-Clock has a new feature allowing parents to choose whether
or not to display the digital clock during the usual ‘stars to sun’
countdown. So for older children, they can now start to learn digital
time, as well as look for the arrival of the sun!
  2. BabyZoo Sleeptrainer($35) – This unique and cute Sleep Trainer shows in an intuitive way when your child is allowed to get out of bed or still needs to catch some sleep ~ Eyes Closed – “I should be sleeping”, Eyes Open -“Rise and shine!”. The solution for early rising children!! How does it work? At bedtime, show your child that Momo is going to sleep. With one push on the button you close Momo’s eyes and explain to your child that as long as Momo is sleeping he/she needs to stay quiet and try to
catch some more sleep. Only when Momo opens his eyes, it is time to
    wake up!
  3. Teach Me Time($40)
    – American Innovative’s Teach Me Time Talking Alarm Clock and
Nightlight features a  color-changing nightlight that teaches kids to
stay in bed until it’s Ok to
wake; parents program “Ok to wake” time, when glow changes from yellow
to green they can get up.  For children 7 and above, Teach me Time! is
a fully functional alarm clock with a snooze function, just like mom’s
    or dad’s.
  4. Stoplight Sleep Enhancing Clock($40) – The Stoplight Sleep Enhancing Clock features a friendly, beautifully-crafted sculpted figure next to a stoplight. The stoplight features red and green lights that can be easily set by parents. A digital clock and optional beeping alarm function are also included. When the red light is on, kids will understand that it is still time to sleep. When the green light turns on, kids will know that it is time to get out of bed.
  5. Good Nite Light($35) –  This friendly looking clock shows that it’s time to rest by displaying
an easily recognized “Moon” caricature. Kids quickly come to
associate the dim unobtrusive moon image with the knowledge that it is
still bedtime and they should go back to sleep. At the time you choose
in the morning, the Good Nite Lite will brighten and display a cheerful
“Sun” caricature letting the child know that is time to wake up and alright to get out of bed. During the
day, the Good Nite Lite automatically shuts itself off to eliminate any
    distractions and to conserve energy.
  6. My Tot Clock($50) – This fun clock is the first all-in-one sleep clock, alarm clock, nightlight, timeout timer, and activity timer for tiny tots who can’t yet tell time. The magic of My Tot Clock is that it changes color to teach little ones when it’s time to sleep (blue light) and when it’s okay to wake (yellow light). Parents set the routine! My Tot Clock, with its child-friendly analog clock display, also plays bedtime stories, lullabies, fun wake-up music, and even white noise to make the traditionally stressful bedtime and morning routines more enjoyable.
