Miracle Baby Born With Heart Outside His Chest

A five-day old baby is being described as a miracle after he survived being born with heart outside of this chest.

Vibha Devi, who was born on Thursday in a remote rural village in India’s Bihar state, was rushed by 24hr train to the capital by his desperate father.

Leaving his wife behind, Chander Manjhi and his father-in-law travelled to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to try to save the child’s life.

During a complete check-up doctors found the baby also has multiple disorders. Apart from the protruding heart, he also has a hole in his heart and has a single pump (for pumping blood). A normal heart has two pumps.

Suffering from a condition known as Ectopia Cordis, which causes the heart to be abnormally placed inside or outside of the body, most babies die within hours of being born.

However, there is guarded optimism for Vibha after the child survived the arduous 800-mile train journey from Muzaffarpur to Delhi.

“He is stable and is being treated for infection. Once the infection goes, we will do the surgery,” said Dr A.K. Bisoi, a cardiologist at the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department at AIIMS.

“His parents are lucky the baby is still alive even after infection as it has spread to all body parts. We are trying our best to save the baby.”

Due to the family’s income and the rarity of the child’s condition, cardiologists at AIIMS, including Dr Bisoi, are providing treatment for free.

A team of five surgeons is on stand-by to operate should Vibha survive the next few weeks.

“The surgery is a multi-layered procedure and might take months,” said Dr Bisoi.

“We have to create space step by step and the chest wall has to be reconstructed.

“In India, no infant with such a defect has survived,” Dr Bisoi added.

‘There are only three survivors suffering from the disease in the world. But this baby is the only one with two heart defects,’ he said.

‘It’s a miracle and challenge for doctors. Every extra day he survives gives us an opportunity to deal with the rare disease and we are learning a lot from the case. We are doing our best to ensure the child lives,’ Bisoi said.

For now, the baby’s heart has been covered with a synthetic membrane and infected blood fully replaced from his body.

In 2006, doctors in Florida, U.S. carried out a similar operation on Naseem Hasni who was born with his heart outside his chest.

Doctors wrapped his heart in Gore-Tex, a waterproof, breathable fabric used in outdoor clothing and medical applications. His heart was then wrapped in a layer of his own skin, to substitute for his missing pericardium, the sac that encloses the heart.

The heart was then slowly eased inside his chest.

Romanian Mom Welcomes 14.5lb Baby!

A mom from the town of Botosani, Romania surprised everyone, including herself, yesterday when she gave birth to a baby weighing 6.7 kg (14.5lbs) and 58 cm.

The baby, who arrived on Saturday, is the tenth child for the family, whose youngest baby is one year old, and the eldest 16 years old.

The new mom told staff at the maternity ward that during her pregnancy she had never seen a gynecologist, and thus she did not know that the baby had reached such a sized.

The baby sets a new record at the hospital, after another newborn had last year 6,450 grams at the same maternity.

Expert Panel: Ontario Should Pay For In Vitro Fertilization

An expert panel on infertility and adoption, appointed by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty last summer, is recommending that the Ontario government should provide funding for up to three cycles of in vitro fertilization for women under the age of 42.

The group said the high cost of fertility treatments is leading to decisions which result in an unacceptable high rate of multiple births in Ontario.

One in six couples will struggle with infertility and the greatest barrier to assisted reproduction services is the cost, with one cycle of IVF costing about $10,000.

To increase chances of success, women and couples choose to have more than one embryo transferred, say the authors of the report. As a result, the rate of multiple births from assisted reproduction was 27.5 per cent in 2006, compared to rates below 10 per cent in other jurisdictions with controls on the number of embryos transferred, they say.

The report recommends the province require all IVF clinics and fertility centres to be accredited and, as a condition of accreditation, required to reduce their multiple birthrate to 15 per cent within five years and 10 per cent within 10 years.

The province could save $400 million to $550 million in health-care costs over the next 10 years by reducing the number of multiple births from assisted reproduction, the panel said.

“Over a period of years, the savings from those multiple birth incidents would more than cover the cost of public funding of three cycles of IVF,” said panel chairman David Johnston, president of the University of Waterloo.

Dalton McGuinty said this week the government is reviewing the recommendations.

“The reason that we asked for the report to be prepared is because we believe that there is a real issue, we believe that it is a growing concern to families — and particularly to women — who are having difficulty getting pregnant. And that’s an issue for all of us,” McGuinty said.

“We want to lend a hand, but we want to do it in a way, again, that is something we can manage financially.”

Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, and Australia fund IVF treatments. Quebec announced this year it would fund three IVF cycles. Ontario scaled back funding for IVF in 1994 to only cover women suffering from blocked Fallopian tubes.

Aeromax Introduces 6 New ‘Get Real Gear’ Outfits For Little Misses

It’s all about girls this Fall at Aeromax. Our favorite dress up company has added 6 new costumes to their already extensive line of costumes for both big and little kids.

Aeromax, understands that the look is as important as the feel and the fit. That’s why they’ve whipped up six fresh outfits just for little girls. Parents will appreciate the sturdy structure of the fabric, the stitching and other details that make these costumes stand up to plenty of wash and wear.

My son is very fond of his Aeromax costume. When he got it last year, he wore it for 4 days straight. We love that their costumes were not created for one-time use, but as an outfit that can be used for pretend play everyday.

Here are a few styles from the Fall line up:

Set Of Quads and Quints Enrolled in Same Kindergarten Class

You know that there are a lot of mega multiples in the world when….

This week
a Prairie Hills Elementary School in Colorado Springs welcomed 2 sets of multiples. In an interesting move, the Denny quintuplets(3 girls, 2 boys) and the Langenbahn quadruplets(4 boys – 2 sets of identicals) have all been enrolled in the same Kindergarten class.

“It’s definitely unique,” said teacher Melissa Coleman, who has 4-year old twins of her own at home.

“I think I definitely have an advantage in that sense and I definitely have a heart for it,” said Coleman.

So far, things are going well in Mrs. Coleman’s class. Tuesday was the only the fifth day of school and the kids are already branching out and making new friends.

“I try to have them meet a new friend everyday. They usually come home and say mom I met my new friend today,” said April Langenbahn, mother of the quadruplets.

During class activities, Mrs. Coleman encourages the siblings to sit at different tables and to play with other children, just as she does with preschool or neighborhood buddies who land in her classroom together. But the challenge of educating multiples twins and up won end in her classroom.

The school plans is to work closely with the parents this year to help them decide if they want to keep their multiples in the same class next year.

Both moms said they think they will probably put their kids in different classrooms after this year, at least to some extent maybe splitting them up three and two for the Dennys and two and two for the Langenbahns.
