RECALL: Gap Infant Swimsuits Due to Strangulation Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with The Gap, today announced a voluntary recall of about 7,000 infant swimsuits because the swimsuits have halter straps that were manufactured too short causing the plastic ring located at the neck of the swimsuit to press against the child’s throat and obstruct the airway. This poses a strangulation hazard to the child.

The firm has received two consumer complaints. No injuries have been reported.

The baby swimsuits were sold in two styles: number 706260 is blue and white and number 700452 is red and white. The style number can be found on the label located on the swimsuit. Both swimsuits were sold in infant sizes up to 24 months and are made of a synthetic knit stretch fabric of polyester and spandex. The straps are made of the same material as the body.

Consumers should immediately take the recalled swimsuits away from children and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Lance Armstrong Expecting Baby #5!

Wow! Lance Armstrong surprised everyone today by announcing, via twitter, that he and girlfriend Anna Hansen will be expecting their second child, his 5th, together this October.

Creating a twitter account in the unborn baby’s nickname, “Cincoarmstrong.” The excited dad-to-be wrote:

“I got 2 arms, 2 legs, a nickname, and [I’m] 2 inches long. See y’all in October…I’m now the size of a lemon, 3.5 inches long, and weigh 1.5 ounces. And oh yeah, I’m on Twitter.”

Lance then followed up the announcement with his own tweet saying,

“What to say? Yet another blessing in our lives. I cannot wait!”

The athlete then confirmed the news to his hometown paper, the Austin-American Statesmen. The future child’s future name could be Jack or Olivia, the paper reports.

In 1996 the 7 time Tour de France winner was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Harsh chemotherapy treatments were believed to have left him unable to have children. At that time, Lance and then-wife Kristin Richards had three children using sperm the cyclist had donated before the treatment.

When Lance became pregnant with Anna 2 years ago, the cyclist revealed that Max was conceived without the use of any artificial fertilization. It is not sure if that is also the case with baby #5.

The new baby will join Lance’s 4 other kids, 8-year old twin girls Isabelle and Grace, son Luke and 10-month-old son Max.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen spent yesterday afternoon enjoying a beautiful day at the park with their boys, Benjamin, 5 months and John, 3.

The couple recently spent an estimated $20 million to build an eight-bedroom, 22m000 square-foot mansion in Brentwood, so that they can be closer to John, Tom’s son with Bridget Moynahan.

RECALL: 217,000 Graco®-Branded Drop Side Cribs Made by LaJobi Due to Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Lajobi, today announced a voluntary recall of about 217,000 Graco®-branded drop side cribs. The drop side hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches, a hazardous gap is created between the drop side and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become wedged or entrapped, posing a risk of suffocation and strangulation. In addition, children can fall from the cribs when the drop side detaches or fails to lock.

CPSC and LaJobi have received a total of 99 reports of drop side incidents, including hardware breakage and drop side detachment. There were two incidents in which children became entrapped in the gap created by the detached drop side. Both children were freed by their caregivers. There were six reports of children falling due to drop side failure, including one report of a mild concussion.

This recall involves LaJobi-manufactured Graco® wood cribs. The full size cribs were sold in cherry, espresso, natural and white finishes. The production date, item number, purchase order number and finish name is printed on a label affixed to the footboard or headboard. “LaJobi” and the crib model name are printed on a product sticker located on the stabilizer bar or bottom rail of the crib. Affected models are listed below.

Simplicity Cribs Recalled by Retailers; Mattress-Support Collapse Can Cause Suffocation and Strangulation

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing the recall of all Simplicity full-size cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames. This recall includes fixed-side and drop-side cribs. These cribs pose a risk of serious injury or death due to entrapment, strangulation, suffocation and fall hazards to infants and toddlers.

The crib’s tubular metal mattress-support frame can bend or detach and cause part of the mattress to collapse, creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged, entrapped or fall out of the crib.

CPSC has received a report of a one-year-old child from North Attleboro, Mass. who suffocated when he became entrapped between the crib mattress and the crib frame in April 2008. CPSC is aware of 13 additional incidents involving the recalled cribs collapsing due to the metal mattress- support frame bending or detaching, including one child entrapment that did not result in injury, and one child who suffered minor cuts to his head when his mattress collapsed and he fell out of the crib.

Parents and caregivers are urged to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Do not attempt to fix these cribs.

Due to the fact that Simplicity and its successor, SFCA Inc., are no longer in business, CPSC has limited information about the number of cribs sold. All Simplicity drop-side cribs have previously been recalled for a hazard involving the drop side. Simplicity drop-side cribs could still be in use by parents or caregivers who are unaware of the recalls or by those who received a repair kit to immobilize the drop side from Simplicity when the firm was still in business. This recall involves all Simplicity cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames, which include but are not limited to the following models:

Study: Baby Swimmers Have Better Balance

For new parents baby swim class is a great way to teach their little ones some co-ordination and safety, while getting out for some socialization and exercise. Now, a new study has found that these little swimmers have better balance and better grasping power than non-swimmers and these differences continue in older kids who are also outperforming their peers developmentally.

A team led by Hermundur Sigmundsson, a professor of psychology at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Brian Hopkins, a professor of psychology from Lancaster University studied 19 baby swimmers and compared them with a control group of 19 other children in Iceland.

Both the groups had similar factors like housing, economic status and parents’ education. The only difference between them was that while one group had participated in baby swimming classes for two hours a week between the ages of 2-3 months to 7 months old, the other did not. These classes included activities like baby somersault on a float mat, diving under water, jumping and trying to grab floating objects while balancing on a parent’s hand.

What the researchers found was that when both the groups at age 5 were asked to do similar exercises, like walking on tiptoes, balancing on one foot, skipping rope, rolling a ball into a goal and catching a beanbag, the baby swimmers excelled where an exercise needed balancing and the ability to reach for things.

Sigmundsson believes the results show that giving babies specific training helps in the long run. “It’s incredibly exciting that specific training for young babies has an effect later in life. Development is a dynamic interplay between maturation, growth, experience and learning. Our study shows that we must never underestimate the learning aspect,” he concluded. – Atula, Staff Writer

Better than Wallpaper: Domestic Offers Unique and Quirky Wall Art

Since 2003, the French company, Domestic, has been offering a selection of beautifully intricate and wonderfully quirky wall drawings. Domestic works with a wide variety of designers and graphic artists, all of whom bring their own ideas and interpretations.
