A bit of baby luxury for mommy!!

This find is for all of you mommies who cannot live without your designer duds even after having a baby. Gucci has come out with a baby carrier that is made for babies 3-9 months and up to 20lbs. Don’t go rushing out yet…this will set you back 760.00 U.S.

So let’s hope your baby stays small and you get more than 3 months use out of it. Available in 2 colours for your convience.

Babies and the Sun

Now that the summer has hit and the weather is nice it’s time to figure out which sunscreen is best for your baby. Babies between 0-6 months cannot wear sunscreen therefore you must keep them in the shade with a nice long hat (goofy looking but effective) and possibly a sun blanket covering them. Once they have reached 6 months you should use a sunscreen that has at least and spf of 20. It also must contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which start protecting right away and form a barrier on top of the skin to protect against sunburns. While getting a children’s sunscreen would be good, it’s not necessary an adult one with the right stuff will work just as well.

If baby gets too much sun make sure that you use a cold compress to help reduce the heat on their skin and soak them in a cool bath with oatmeal or cornstarch.

This all takes me back to a vacation we recently took to Arizona. We had lathered up our 7 month old baby, put a sunscreen t-shirt on him and strapped on his big brimmed hat to go to the pool. The temperature was a teaming 105 deg and we were dying. Making my way through the crowd I noticed a very small baby in the pool (6lbs maybe), no hat and wearing a tiny bikini. My heart almost stopped – there were 2. A set of twins both sitting out in full sun being cradled by mom and aunt like they were toys!! Terrible, sometimes you just don’t know what to do.

Cover up your munchkins for the summer to keep their skin safe for life. A burn when they are small could make them more receptive to skin cancer when hey get older.

Awesome play space for baby

I came across this play area for baby while researching playmats for our baby. It is nice because there are walls on it so that the baby can’t get away if you are off doing the dishes PLUS it has an attachment that allows the whole thing to rock. Fabulous!!

Baby teeth used for stem cells

First it was cordblood and now it is baby teeth. While we don’t keep either one do we really need to pay to have them stored as a just in case?

Baby and wisdom teeth, along with jawbone and periodontal ligament, are non-controversial sources of stem cells that could be “banked” for future health needs, according to a National Institutes of Health researcher who spoke today at the American Dental Association’s national media conference.

Harvested from the pulp layer inside the teeth, jawbone and periodontal ligament, these stem cells may one day correct periodontal defects and cleft palate, and may help restore nerve cells lost in diseases such as Parkinson’s.

The stem cells have the potential to save injured teeth and grow jawbone. Regenerating an entire tooth is on the horizon.

About 1 in 600 babies has a cleft lip or cleft palate, clefts appear in several family members, so heredity is important. Sometimes substances in the environment, called teratogens, may be associated with clefts. But most babies with clefts have no known relatives with clefts and no known exposure to teratogens. A few babies with clefts also have other abnormalities.

Parkinson disease affects both men and women in almost equal numbers. It shows no social, ethnic, economic or geographic boundaries. In the United States, it is estimated that 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, joining the 1.5 million Americans who currently have Parkinson disease. While the condition usually develops after the age of 65, 15% of those diagnosed are under 50.

Banking cordblood is 795.00(processing) +155.00(family registration) and 125.00 per year. Banking baby teeth is estimated at 595.00(processing) + 89.00 per year.

So with Parkinson’s Disease being something that is usually developed after the age of 65 would a tooth that has been preserved for 60 or more years be beneficial to someone at that time? I guess because it is less controversial than embryonic stem cells researchers are continually looking for new ways to combat current diseases.

Could I Be Pregnant?

You’ve missed your period and your not feeling yourself…could you be pregnant? While some would quickly jump to that conclusion there are many factors that could make your period late. Too much exercise, poor diet and the introduction or re-introduction of sexual activity can all be a cause of our friend being late.

Many of the symtoms that could lead you to believe you are pregnant also happen when you are about to get your period. ie. bloating, tender breasts, cravings and grumpiness.

What is the best way to determine if a little one is in the future? Blood test. Although a quick pregnancy test from the pharmacy can confirm yes or no it could also miss a pregnancy if you are not far enough along. It will only determine if the hormone is present. A blood test will measure the amount of hormone in your system. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone that is produced by the placenta. It is detectable in the blood and urine within 10 days of fertilization (1 to 2 days after implantation). This test can actually measure the exact amount of hCG in the woman’s blood. This measurement can help give a rough estimate of the age of the fetus. It can also help determine if the pregnancy is progressing normally. The test from the pharmacy, described above, is not able to provide this extra information.
