Babies Accidentally Switched At Illinois Hospital

State public health officials say two babies were accidentally switched at a southern Illinois hospital, with one of the infants sent home with the wrong family.

The mistake happened in March at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion and involved two newborn boys.

Hospital workers soon learned of the error and immediately contacted the family.

A spokeswoman for the state health department says the hospital wasn’t required to report the matter, but it did on April 4th.

Because of patient privacy laws, the hospital isn’t commenting and the families’ names aren’t being released.

Baby Delivered In Hospital Lobby

I always say that babies will come when they want to and this one proves that theory – yet again!

Yesterday morning, Matt and Brooke Spencer went to Methodist Hospital to delivery their baby.

While Brooke was sitting in a wheelchair her husband discovered that the baby was actually ready to come out.

“I looked and could see her pants were bulging a little bit so she sat down and I pulled down her pants, and there was the baby,” said the proud new dad.

With Matt’s help, Brooke delivered Hayden Ella Spencer right there in the lobby of the hospital.

Baby Ella arrived perfectly healthy weighing 6 pounds, 13 ounces.

Pennsylvania Mom Has A McBaby

A Pennsylvania mom shocked breakfast goers yesterday morning when she delivered her baby in bathroom at her local McDonalds.

The expectant mom went into the women’s restroom shortly after 9:30am and delivered a full-term baby boy a few minutes later, much to the surprise – and delight — of customers and staff.

Mother and son were transferred to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital shortly after the delivery. They are both in stable condition. The pair could not be identified because of medical privacy regulations.

“She went in the bathroom,” said restaurant manager Stephanie Tomlin. “Pretty soon, another woman came out of the restroom and said the girl in the next stall was having a baby. It was extremely exciting.”

The birth was assisted by a McDonald’s staffer , who is an emergency medical technician.

“I helped,” she said. “But the baby was pretty much out by the time I got there.”

Early Preview: Hospital Drama Deliver Me

Last week I had the pleasure of previewing a great new show for Discovery Health.

Deliver Me is a pregnancy drama that follows 3 unbelievable Obgyn’s at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles.

Two of the three doctors met while in medical school and all three bonded during their residency. They now share a practice, clients and their love for babies.

The show takes you through a typical day at the hospital, highlighting many of the common complications that some expectant moms may experience.

I love how these three doctors take the time to fully explain what is happening before continuing on with the drama, allowing viewers who are not in the medical profession to follow along.

I find it interesting to see what is happening behind the scenes. Moms who have had any type of complications during their pregnancy will find it familiar to see other women who are experiencing what they have already been through.

Deliver Me premiere’s Tuesday March 4th on Discovery Health at 10:00pm Please visit the official site for more information and additional airing dates.

Valentines Baby Arrives At Walmart

This story is so great, you could almost think it was a scene out of a movie…

A volunteer firefighter shopping at a Wal-Mart store on Valentine’s Day wound up helping to deliver a baby in the greeting card aisle.David Hau says he was at the store in Punxsutawney Thursday morning when the store made a public announcement seeking a doctor or anyone with medical experience.

Hau has been with the Elk Run Volunteer Fire Co. for three months and is trained as an emergency medical technician.

Hau says he asked the woman if she could wait until an ambulance arrived, but she said this was her seventh child and delivery would be no problem.

The store gave Hau a pair of gloves and 15 minutes later, the woman delivered a baby boy.

Let’s be honest – after already doing this 6 times before, you know this mom was calling the shots from the top.

Brooke Burke Talks Childbirth

The other night Brooke Burke and boyfriend David Charvet attended the LA premiere of Ricki Lake’s movie The Business of Being Born.

A few nights later while she was up with her sick daughter, Brooke couldn’t sleep so she decided to write. She is dreaming of labor and can’t not wait to meet her new baby.

Here are her thoughts:

I went to an amazing premiere a few nights ago called “The Business Of Being Born”. It’s a documentary by Ricky Lake about the birthing process and the many choices we have. It was very emotional, informative and shocking in many ways. The information it provided for expectant mothers was eye opening and a bit disturbing. It was pro home birth. I used to think I wanted to experience that, but I was quickly talked out of it by my ex who is a Doctor, and very conservative. It turns out that I delivered Neriah 5 weeks premature, and it would have been a very dangerous situation. I went into labor with Sierra 3 wks early, and I was induced with Rain for several reasons 2 wks early.

As much as the thought of a candle lit, warm bath delivery at home sounds kind of cool; I think I feel safer in the hospital. I have to admit though, after watching the film I really hope that all things happen naturally in my body and I can deliver with out being educed.I think it is so important to have a birthing plan and go over it with your Doctor.

I know many women who have had a traumatic experience because of a lack of information, intimacy, and fear. Try to be as informed as possible before you get close to your due date about the process, get all your questions answered. If a natural delivery is important to you, find out what your Dr.’s percentage of c-sections is, and how often he educes and why. You can also have a Dula present at your birth, in or out of the hospital.

Sometimes what we imagine and wish for is out of our control because of unexpected circumstances or complications. I don’t want to scare anyone, because labor is scary enough, but get informed, so you can have a beautiful experience.

Fingers crossed that the 4th time will be her best experience. She is very lucky to have 3 healthy girls. Someone once told me that the pain of labor is forgettable – until you get pregnant again!

Two Officers Help Deliver and Save The Life Of A 2lb Baby

Yesterday morning, police in Wyandanch, NY received a report of a miscarriage.

When they arrived they found a pregnant Patrice Green, 21, in heavy labor on her bedroom floor, just minutes from giving birth.

The officers kept telling her not to push, but they baby was clearly not listening because just moments after paramedics arrived so did the tiny newborn.

After an EMS worker cut the umbilical cord, the officers wrapped the underweight, premature baby in a blanket and rushed in their cruiser toward Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, radioing ahead for roadblocks to speed their way.

The baby boy, born two months early and just more than 2 pounds, was still and quiet. But as one of the officers blew oxygen with a tube near his face, a wail filled the squad car.

Today both, mom and baby are in stable condition thanks to the quick thinking of these officers.

Christina Aguilera Rumoured To Have a Scheduled C-Section

The Daily Mail is reporting that Christina Aguilera is “Too Posh To Push” and that she has scheduled her C-section for January 10th.

We have covered this issue many times and hope that Christina understands the risks that are involved with scheduling your delivery.

Two things that make a natural birth critical are: hormones are triggered allowing proper development, and the babys face (mucus membranes) are innocculated with the moms flora as it slides past on the way out. This transfers the moms immunity info to the baby.

Let’s hope that this rumor isn’t true and that Christina is as tough as we think she is…
