Crummy Parent Alert: Father Leaves Baby Out In The Cold To Go Gambling

Emergency services rescued a baby early this morning after the father left the child in a car to go gambling.

Police, fire and EMS were called after Patrons of the Silver Dollar Casino heard the baby cried, while his father gambled inside.

“A car was found with the windows covered with blankets to avoid viewing from outside,” said police.

“Fire Crews gained access to the vehicle and removed a 21-month old male child from a rear child restraint.

“The child had vomited on his clothing, (and was) very lightly dressed with no shoes or socks.”

By the time crews reached the baby shortly after midnight, investigators believe the baby had been in the car for approximately six hours in temperatures that hovered around -8 Celsius.

Police believe that the father may have checked on the child from time to time.

The 50-year-old father has been charged with a criminal charge of abandoning a child, while the baby has been seized by Child and Family Services.

Couple That Abandoned Baby Ordered To Visit Children’s Cemetery

Last week, I was shocked to read about a mom that abandoned her newborn outside a fire department inside a diaper box.

Solicitor Trey Gowdy said Thursday that the teen mother and adult father will be required to go to a children’s cemetery and a mortuary, complete counseling sessions and do community service.

The infant’s mother, whose name authorities are not releasing because she turned 17 on Sunday, must complete a series of tasks through the 7th Circuit’s Juvenile Arbitration Program.

He also said the tasks are non-negotiable and failure to complete any task will result in prosecution as a juvenile.

“I’m going to require her to visit a children’s cemetery, which if you have never been to one, is one of the saddest places you’ll ever go,” Gowdy said. “I’m going to require her to go to a mortuary because I want her to see how this could have turned out. I’m going to require her to go to a maternity ward so she can see how this should have turned out.”

The 21-year-old father of the infant, is not eligible for a diversionary program, but it will be recommended to a judge that he only receive probation as long as he completes similar tasks. His sentence will be decided by a judge.

The parents were deemed to have made an attempt to comply with the Safe Haven for Babies Act, which is also called Daniel’s Law. Authorities decided the law was not accurately followed, however, because the child was not placed in the hands of a caregiver and was left outside on a night when temperatures were in the mid-30s. The baby’s body temperature had fallen to 88 degrees, a condition that can cause medical problems.

The couple, who also have a 2-year-old and an 11-month-old, must also visit a prison, complete reproductive health counseling and parenting classes, take random drug and alcohol tests and perform community service at the Whitney Fire Department.

Firefighter Finds Newborn Baby In A Diaper Box

As I prepare to welcome #2, I am always shocked to read stories of abandoned newborns.

Friday, a South Carolina firefighter found a newborn baby boy inside a ‘Luvs’ Diaper box in front of the fire station.

The sheriff’s office said the newborn was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in good condition.

According to officials, the baby weighs about 6.5 pounds and officials believe he was about six hours old when found.

In compliance with the Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies Act, any infant that is 30 days old or younger who is presented to the hospital will be assessed for health and wellbeing, provided care when needed, and then physical custody will be turned over to the Department of Social Services.

The saddest part is that the ‘mom’ put this little guy in a Luvs diaper box – how ironic….

Illinois Raises Awareness About Abandoned Babies

Tuesday April 8th, 2008 was designated an awareness day for Abandoned babies in the State of Illinois.

The Governor, Rod Blagojevich, would like distressed parents to know that the fire station, police station or hospital are legal places a parent can hand over a newborn that is up to seven days old.

The baby must be given to a staff person on duty.

Pekin Fire Chief Chuck Lauss said, “They bring that baby in and relinquish custody of that baby. No questions asked. Completely anonymously. They have 72 hours to come back to that facility and find out where that baby has gone to.”

The Mayor of Pekin, David Tebben, said, “We’re looking to reach out and say we understand there’s sometimes some difficulty in life. We’re here to help. Come to us, we’re here to help.”

As of 2007, the signs were mandated under the amendment to Illinois’ safe haven law. It was important to do this because since 2001, 49 babies have been illegally abandoned… and half of those babies have died.

It would be nice if they took their campaign to the high schools. Too many teenage moms are are hiding their pregnancies and then harming their babies after delivery. If these moms knew that they could give the baby up- no questions asked – maybe they wouldn’t make such irrational decisions post partum.

Parents Leave Baby On Train Station Platform By Mistake

Could you imagine realizing that both you and your husband have boarded a train and that you have left your child behind on the platform?

That is exactly what happened to a couple from New Jersey after they boarded a train in New Brunswick.

New Brunswick police say the parents were hauling several pieces of luggage, and each thought the other was carrying the child, when they boarded an NJ Transit train at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Instead, the infant, who is just 6 months old, was still in a stroller on the train platform.

Once the father realized the mistake, he took a cab back to the previous station to New Brunswick to retrieve the baby, who was unharmed.

I can’t believe that the baby was okay when the father arrived….this couple is very lucky

Update: Shoplifting Suspect Who Left Baby in TJ Maxx Turns Herself in

We reported yesterday on a horrible story of a mom that abandoned her baby because she was suspected of shoplifting.

Today Newsday writes that the Bronx mother has turned herself into police.

Lieutenant Chris McNerney says 39-year-old Suzette Gruber arrived at the police station Tuesday morning with her attorney. McNerney said she was to be charged with child abandonment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say Gruber and another woman were suspected of shoplifting at the discount clothing store on Monday. When a security guard approached she ran leaving the baby in the carriage. However police said she also left behind indentifying information.

Police said a man claiming to be the baby’s father went to police headquarters Monday night with a birth certificate, but officers wouldn’t release the child to him.

The baby has been placed with Westchester Child Protective Services.

What I didn’t know yesterday was that the baby is only 8 months old!! Hearing that really broke my heart.

Could you imagine leaving your 8 month old baby in the middle of a store because you needed to flee the scene?

Baby Abandoned in TJ-Maxx After Woman Suspected of Shoplifting

At the end of August I reported on a toddler that was abandoned in Walmart after his father was suspected of shoplifting.

While reading the story, I thought it was the craziest thing I had ever heard.

Well I guess this is common practice for thieves because a women left an infant in TJ-Maxx over the weekend after being suspected of shoplifting.

The infant was left in his stroller as the women bolted from the TJ-Maxx on North Central Avenue just before 6 p.m.

Store personnel suspected the woman was shoplifting, Greenburgh police Lt. Desmond Martin said at the scene.

“The mother panicked, or the guardian panicked, and just took off,” he said. “It’s sad.”

A man Martin said was the baby’s father came to the scene around 7 p.m., and was taken in a cruiser to police headquarters. He was not under arrest.

Police searched the immediate area for the woman, but did not find the women.

The baby was taken by ambulance to police headquarters about 7 p.m. Martin said the county’s Child Protective Services was being called.

Baby Abandoned TWICE in One Day

A mom that was reportedly on drugs, gave her baby to a man who gave her a ride.

Once he arrived home, he and his wife wrapped the baby in a blanket, attached a note, drove to a Portage hospital and left the baby on an emergency room counter.

The 5-month-old girl, who was dirty and hungry but otherwise in good heath, was placed in foster care after Sunday’s events, police said.

“The main thing is the baby is safe,” said LaPorte Police Chief of Detectives Dennis Behenna.

Police said Michael Williams was driving home from work in LaPorte early Sunday when he was stopped by a woman he knows holding her baby. She asked the man to give her a ride to Gary, and when they arrived the woman exited the car and asked Williams to take her baby.

A hospital worker found the baby and called child protective services, who in turn placed the baby in temporary foster care.

The child’s grandmother later reported her daughter and the child missing. The mother checked into a Gary hospital for treatment, police said, and later called police wanting her child back.

These horrible stories really stress me out. I could never bear to be without my son, let alone hand him off to some random person. SOURCE

Father Abandons Son At Walmart After Being Stopped For Shoplifting

A young boy aged 2 or 3 was left at a Walmart in Oklahoma after his dad or caregiver was stopped by security on suspicion of shoplifting.

The boy is apparently unable to identify himself, and no one has reported him missing.

He has been in Department of Human Services custody since Friday, when he was left inside the Wal-Mart store on west Reno.

A man was pushing a shopping cart with the boy in it when security personnel spotted the man shoplifting and confronted him, Knight said. The man then fled the store, leaving the boy behind.

I cannot believe that this toddlers mom has not come forward.

This poor kid is probably SO scared.

States Crack Down on Parents and Caregivers Who Leave Children Alone in Cars

Well it’s about time that someone actually stepped up and did something about this HUGE problem. There are about 4 or 5 kids a week that are being reported left in hot vehicles for longer than 20 minutes. Some are saved, but a good majority die from extreme temperatures and dehydration.

A Florida mom who faces misdemeanor charges for leaving her 2-month-old son in an idling Pontiac is just the latest example of the nationwide crackdown on parents who leave their kids alone in cars and then face fines — or worse, jail time.

Twelve states have laws specifically prohibiting leaving young children alone in cars, some making it a traffic violation with a penalty of a ticket and a fine, and others — including Florida — making it a misdemeanor, with the possible punishment being a prison sentence as well as a hefty fine.

In the case of the Orlando mother, Whitlene Loussaint, police got involved because the car with the baby boy inside was stolen in the few minutes it took Loussaint to run back into her church to grab an umbrella. The car turned up blocks from the church parking lot where it was taken, with the doors wide open and the baby unhurt.

The Florida children-in-cars law has just been amended to make it a second-degree misdemeanor to leave a youngster under 6 alone in a car for more than 15 minutes or for any amount of time if the car is running. The new regulations went into effect July 1, and if Loussaint is prosecuted, she could face 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Ironically, many of the moms and dads who leave their young kids alone in cars aren’t neglectful or abusive parents, according to Kids and Cars founder and president Janette Fennell.

“In most cases, it’s very good parents,” she said. “It tends to be for that person’s convenience — they’re not thinking of the safety of the children. For some reason they think, I’ll just be a minute — and it’s never just a minute.”

In addition to Florida, the other states that have specific children-in-cars laws include Connecticut, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Washington.

Fennell said Kids and Cars is also working on getting a federal bill passed that regulates safety devices on automobiles. The law would mandate that all vehicles have the following three features:

• a standard and wide range of rearview vision when the car is in reverse to prevent children from being backed over;
• a feature on power windows that cause them to automatically reverse if they hit an obstruction, making strangulation of children peering out impossible;
• a brake shift interlock that stops a car from being thrown into “drive” unless someone has a foot on the brake.

Fennell said she thinks each case should be analyzed individually in terms of what sort of punishment is appropriate.

But taking a case-by-case approach can be a problem.

Currently, mothers who leave children alone in the car are treated much more harshly than fathers — with moms being 26 percent more likely to do time than dads and their average sentence being two years longer, according to a study done by The Associated Press.
