The Toddler That Underwent Surgery To Remove 4 Limbs: Released From Hospital

At the beginning of November Lakshmi Tatma, 2, under went surgery to remove 4 limbs has been released from the hospital.

The tot was born joined to a ‘parasitic twin’ (a second baby that it is incompletely formed or wholly dependent on the body functions of the complete fetus.)

She is pictured here sitting on her dad’s lap with her legs in braces.

It is amazing to see the transformation that this toddler has undergone. Before the surgery her legs were where her hips, but they were pointing vertically.

The almost 24 hour operation required a team of more than 30 physicians to remove Lakshmi’s extra limbs, salvaged her organs, and rebuilt her pelvis area. We wish this family well.

Baby Born During Ice Storm Doing Well

The 26 weeker born during an ice storm earlier this week is said holding her own in hospital.

Dorotea entered the world Tuesday, 3 months early at Henry County Health Center. Because not all health care facilities are equipped to look after babies that are born this early, she needed to be transferred to a better hospital.

Under normal conditions, an ambulance or helicopter would have transported a special response unit to pick up Dorotea. But an ice storm made it difficult for the University of Iowa’s Air Care helicopter and the ambulance to attempt such a dangerous trip.

Knowing the small community hospital in Henry County didn’t have the facilities to treat the preemie, Mike Acarregui and John Dagle, neonatal doctors at the University of Iowa, took action.

“The community hospitals don’t run into extremely preterm kids every day. When they do, it’s really hard,” Acarregui told ABC News. “They are used to having the support of a tertiary care center.”

Acarregui grabbed a rescue pack and the two doctors drove Acarregui’s Audi four-wheel-drive sedan to pick up Dorotea and bring her to Iowa City. Meanwhile, doctors in Mount Pleasant improvised their own resources, rebuilding a warming bed in an ambulance for the baby to use on the trip back to Iowa City.

Despite the lack of resources for extremely preterm babies, Acarregui said the community hospital staff saved the baby’s life with its improvised and meticulous efforts.

While the doctors were in transit, the medical staff at the hospital was able to re-configure some of their equipment for this micro patient.

A respiratory therapist came up with a way to mix oxygen gas, so the baby would receive an appropriate oxygen level, even though the hospital did not have the usual materials to mix oxygen for babies. Another doctor at the hospital kept the baby’s blood sugar up intravenously. Still others took a warmer bed from an ambulance, disassembled it, and re anchored it to stabilize it and properly fit the baby.

Preterm babies’ lungs do not produce enough of a substance called surfactant, which is what prevents the lungs from collapsing every time you exhale. Preemies’ lungs have a tendency to get stuck shut because of a lack of surfactant.

When the doctors arrived, they were most concerned about Dorotea’s breathing. Acarregui and Dagle inserted a breathing tube into Dorotea. Acarregui put surfactant into the baby’s lungs to help the baby breathe and treated her umbilical cord. Dagle used a hand-held ventilator to manually pump air into Dorotea’s lungs during the entire ride. The tiny baby rode to Iowa City in her specially made warming bed.

Studies show that risk of death increases significantly when a preterm baby is born in a small hospital that does not have the specialized facilities and experienced staff for the tiny patients.

The baby is now receiving care at The University Of Iowa. Doctors have said that she currently has a brain bleed, which is common for these little fighters.

While many may think that this story is unusual, it is probably more common than most people know. The unbelievable transfer teams that work at major hospitals across North America save many of these small babies everyday. One of the babies we profiled last year was given a less than 1% chance by the team when they arrived at the hospital to transfer him. Not only did he make the trip, but he has gone on to thrive and develop like a regular 2 year old.

Premature Baby Christmas Card

Ads of The World posted this in the summer time, but I thought it would be more appropriate to put it up now.

This cute picture was done well with the baby Jesus sitting in an isolette instead of his manger.

Becks and Cruz

David Beckham appears to be trying to start a new trend with the oversized hat he is wearing while out with youngest son, Cruz, 2.

David and Victoria Beckham (not shown), visited the the Winter Wonderland Ice Rink in Hyde Park, London last night.

The kids strapped on some skates and zipped around the ice as mom and dad looked on.

It was cute to see David give his son Romeo a high-five after completing his first lap.

The Silver Cross S4

Our stroller crapped out on us at the mall earlier this week (Ughh!), so we are currently on the hunt for a replacement.

Because I see so many stroller everyday while doing research for this site, I am finding it hard to figure out which one I want.

I have made a list of things I need my stroller to have and am currently plowing through manufacturers sites checking off which ones fit my criteria.

The Silver Cross S4 stroller is a cross between an all terrain jogging stroller and a chic high end pushchair.

It is suitable for infants from birth to toddler, has large, puncture proof soft-ride tires and it folds neatly enough to fit into the trunk of most cars.

The seat features a five point harness, head rest and material comfy enough to make any child happy.

The large canopy with come in handy on stormy day, as will the deep-padded foot muff that comes standard with this stroller.

For moms who like to shop, the bottom of the chassis has a generous storage basket and a diaper bag with mat.

All Silver Cross needs to do is add a snack tray and a cup/bottle holder to make this stroller perfect for us, but I am willing to overlook those small issues if I could just find someone that will ship it to Canada…

Nothing is more FRUSTRATING that finding a product that is perfect and then realizing out that is not available in your country!!

Available at FAO.com for $599

New Folic Acid Recommendations For All Women

Researchers are always trying determine ways to protect babies against birth defects. Canadian experts are recommending women of childbearing age increase their intake of folic acid to five milligrams a day.

Previous guidelines recommended one milligram daily — the amount found in many prenatal vitamins.

The new recommendations are being directed at all women of childbearing age because many pregnancies are often unplanned, with moms sometimes not knowing they are expecting for weeks. Folic acid taken early in the pregnancy can drastically reduce neural tube defects and other problems such as congenital heart disease, oral facial clefts, limb defects and some pediatric cancers.

The new guidelines come from experts with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the Motherisk Program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

“The good news is that a lot of this heartache can be very easily prevented. Women just need to take multivitamins containing a little more folic acid, and they need to start taking it at least three months before becoming pregnant,” said Dr. Vyta Senikas, the associate executive vice-president with the SOCG.

Food that are already rich in folate, are spinach, chick peas and asparagus.

Experts are also calling on the government to dramatically increase folic acid supplementation in products that are already fortified, such as white flour, cornmeal and enriched pasta.
