Improper Dosing of Cough Medicine Sends 7,000 Children to ER Each Year

The FDA had been issuing very strong warnings lately about administering cough medicine to toddlers under 2.

Today some official numbers were released that are very scary.

In their first estimate, the U.S. government believes that cough and cold medicines send about 7,000 children to hospital emergency rooms each year.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that bout two-thirds of the cases were children who took the medicines unsupervised. However, about one-quarter involved cases in which parents gave the proper dosage and an allergic reaction or some other problem developed.

About two-thirds of the cases were children who took the medicines unsupervised. However, about one-quarter involved cases in which parents gave the proper dosage and an allergic reaction or some other problem developed.

Because it is believed that an estimated 1,600 of the 7,100 children are under 2, the FDA’s new recommendations, if followed, will hopefully reduce such ER visits by 23 percent.

The most common symptoms reported were allergic reactions like hives and itching and neurological symptoms like drowsiness and unresponsiveness. CDC researchers said that most of the medicines involved were liquid combinations of cough and cold treatments.

Pregnant Woman Charged With Drunk Driving

I hate reading about stuff like this…some people just don’t get it.

A 19-year-old Te Puke woman has been charged with drunken driving, after blowing a reading of 750. That is five times the legal limit for her age, which is 150. The woman, who is six months pregnant, did not have a licence and was carrying three passengers when police stopped her.

She told police she was driving because she believed she was the least drunk of the four, and wanted to get back to Te Puke. She will appear in court next month.

Charlotte Church Out For A Walk

New mom Charlotte Church was seen taking four-month-old Ruby Megan for a walk near her house. Charlotte pushes the uber expensive Silver Cross Balmoral, which is popular with royalty and costs almost $2500.

She has stalled on an offer to film the third series of her TV chat show, telling producers that she doesn’t want her new baby “brought up by nannies”.

The media has been hard on her because she is still holding onto some of her baby weight. I love that she actually looks like the majority of new moms in the world.

It isn’t normal to loose all of your baby weight in 3 weeks.

Keep up the good work Charlotte. Be a mom first and then the rest will fall in place.

Couple Arrested for Quintuplet Scam

About a month ago a South Carolina website covered a story about a couple that was expecting quintuplets.

They had some quirky story about meeting online, finding love and then finding out they were expecting septuplets. The woman then went on to say that she had lost two of the babies and was now only expecting quintuplets.

The photo in the story showed the couple standing outside their double wide with their arms around each other. They were appealing to the public to help them buy some supplies for the new bunch, even listing their personal phone number at the end of the article.

I went back and forth about covering the story and then decided to let it go because there was something off about it. It seemed weird, almost desperate to me that the couple had listed their personal phone number.

Now I know why…It was all a lie!!

Nancy Cantu and her boyfriend Juan Solis were arrested by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office at their home around 7:30pm Monday. The Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the couple after their claim of having the quintuplets gained large amounts of media and community attention.

It was through this investigation that authorities say they discovered the couple’s claims were false.

The couple was asking for money and other donations for their expectant children. Deputies say they received anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 in gifts and money and could face up to five years in prison if convicted for this felony charge.

In related news, the Missouri mother that claimed she was having sextuplets has been sentenced to 4 years in jail for failing to pay restitution and missed several probation violation hearings. This crazy woman got as far as faking the actual births of the babies.

You know there’s a screw loose here. You can’t fake having a birth that is usually attended by 50 medical professionals!!!
