Argentine Mom Expecting Septuplets

Sextuplets (6 babies) seem to the norm lately, with two sets on the way and 2 sets born on the same day just a few months ago.

Aside from the McCaughey septuplets, born in 1997, you never hear about moms that are pregnant with 7 babies.

It has been reported that a young Argentine mom is expecting septuplets any day now.

Yolanda, 22, who has already named her babies Zahara, Acsa, Aixa, Sjael, Zalma, Nahir and Zael, said “my mother had twins and my husband’s great grandmother had triplets.”

Doctors estimate that the smallest baby weighs 14.11 ounces, two are one and a half pounds and the largest weighs 4.63 pounds.

Yolanda confesses she took medication and vitamins plus 85 shots because the babies prevented her from gaining weight for a while, but the unemployed father-to-be, 27, confessed surprise at Yolanda’s strength.

Medical sources say this will be the first birth of septuplets in Argentina conceived naturally.

It is weird that the babies weights vary so much. There must be identical twins in there that are have nutritional sharing issues…

Gwen and Kingston

Gwen Stefani was seen out with her son Kingston, 1 this week in Maui.

We have all been stuck pushing an empty stroller after our toddler decides that the view is better from our arms. What I don’t understand is why Gwen is not using one of the 10 custom strollers that she has at home?

She probably has one of the best collections of strollers in Hollywood and for some reason she has chosen the $12.99 special from Walmart with no canopy or storage….

Kingston wears Robeez Firetruck Shoes in Navy.

Breastfeeding Success Begins At The Hospital

Breast milk and breastfeeding are recognized to be the ideal choices of nutrition and feeding for infants. Breastfeeding is the normal method of feeding infants, and provides many benefits to both infants and mothers.
In addition to receiving essential nutrients, breastfed infants have lower rates of ear infections, gastroenteritis, asthma, obesity and diabetes. Benefits for mothers include decreased incidence of breast and ovarian cancer.National goals in the U.S. are a breastfeeding initiation rate of 75 percent (with an exclusive breastfeeding rate for the first 3 months of 60 percent), and continuation of 50 percent at 6 months of age (with 25 percent exclusively breastfeeding).

A new study in Birth: Issues in Perinatal Care suggests that implementing 5 breastfeeding-friendly practices in hospitals following birth can significantly improve long-term breastfeeding success. Nearly two-thirds of mothers who engaged in all 5 supportive practices were still breastfeeding 4 months after going home. The specific hospital practices include:

  • Initiating breastfeeding within 1 hour of delivery
  • Keeping infants in the mother’s hospital room
  • Feeding infants only breast milk in the hospital; no supplementation of water or formula
  • Prohibiting pacifier use in the hospital
  • Providing a telephone number to call for breastfeeding help after hospital discharge

Breastfeeding support is necessary for success. If new moms don’t feel that their things are going well and don’t have any one to talk to they will turn to formula because it is perceived as being easier.

At the very least, if someone just called after the the baby arrived home to answer questions, it may help new moms feel like they have someone rooting for them.

Cow Has Quadruplets

I guess the multiple boom is not just happening to humans, but animals too. A month back a tiger had triplets and yesterday it was reported that a cow in Ontario had quadruplets.

After giving birth to twin calves two years ago, an eastern Ontario cow has really raised some eyebrows in the agricultural community by delivering four healthy calves, two bulls and two heifers. “She had twins two years ago, but she missed last year,” said Lyn Haskins, who owns the farm with his wife Cathy. “She caught this year, big time.”

Haskins said Sunday’s birth of quads has gotten around and people are eager to have a look at the offspring of Mother and a bull named Wulf’s Lowell.

“I’ve had a lot of people come and take a peek at them,” he said. “Some farmers have been in the business 40 years and said they never heard of it.”

Indeed, Mother has joined the ranks of a rare breed with her unexpected fourfold delivery.

A 1996 story by Associated Press about the birth of quad calves on a farm in Sonoma, Calif., ranks the likelihood of a beef cow birthing quadruplets as one in a million.

Professor Walter Johnson of the department of population medicine at the University of Guelph said he has only heard of quads being born to beef cows “four or five” times in 35 years in his field.

The calves, are named Hershey (Cathy Haskins works at the Smiths Falls chocolate factory), Scotty, Gladys and Christian.
